Imagine a scenario where moving from one African nation to another comes with fewer hurdles. The African Union (AU) is championing such a scenario through the Free Movement Protocol (FMP). This initiative is about facilitating the free movement of individuals across Africa, enabling residency and the establishment of livelihoods in neighbouring countries. It’s akin to extending a warm invitation to your neighbours, encouraging a closer-knit African community.

So far, 33 countries have signed the protocol, demonstrating support for this initiative. Among these, four nations - Mali, Niger, Rwanda, and São Tomé and Príncipe - have ratified the protocol, showcasing a deeper commitment to making the ideals of the FMP a reality.

This move heralds a significant stride towards fostering a more united and accessible Africa. However, for this vision to fully materialise, it's imperative that more countries endorse the FMP. It's beyond merely redrawing boundaries; it's about dismantling trade barriers, promoting cultural exchanges, and collectively advancing towards a prosperous Africa.

Moreover, the FMP is a linchpin for realising the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aimed at bolstering economic competitiveness across the continent.
